Call for applicants

Sex Calumny features two types of material: a weekly advice column in which writers will respond panel-style to reader-submitted questions, and short essays in response to current issues of sex and sexuality. To extend the diversity of perspective in discussion, we are looking for well-spoken, open-minded people to participate in the advice column as guest panelists. We are also interested in your articles and editorials on the topics of sex, romance, and related issues. (If you need some inspiration, check out the suggestion page.)
To apply, see instructions below.

We are also seeking to expand our panel of regular writers.  If you are interested and willing to contribute to the advice column on a weekly to biweekly basis, please let us know.

To Apply

Email sexcalumny AT gmail DOT com. In the subject heading, please specify that you are interested in writing.

Please provide a little information about yourself. Who are you? How did you find the site? What do you do, what interests you?

We are interested in your personal credo about sex, sexuality, relationships, sexual politics, etc. You don’t have to tell us how many notches are on your bedpost or describe the extremes of your sexual experience unless you find that relevant. We actually want to know why you are interested in writing for this blog, where you are coming from ethically, and what kind of perspective you could offer–particularly as it might differ from the points of view already on the panel. This information will help us know whether we should contact you directly to address a particular issue before throwing it out for the guest pool.

After you give this information, please indicate that you have read and agree with the guidelines for writers.

Finally, you may wish to protect your privacy from employer Google searches and the like. We’d appreciate a real name to attach to your Email address for the purpose of addressing you as a human being, but it is probably a good idea to indicate a pseudonym if you’d like to use one on the site.

Guidelines for writers:

  • Advice questions will be answered on a first-come-first-respond basis. You probably want to read the responses that come before yours and you may address them in your comment, but you needn’t feel obliged to—or to agree. Disagreement is good for conversion.
  • There is usually no right answer, but the best answers are those that take the physical and emotional health of the greatest number of people into consideration.
  • Try to be concise—aim for a paragraph or two, although it’s understood that sometimes a question may require a lengthier response or elaboration of personal experience.
  • All responses are subject to gentle proofreading and editing. This will mostly be for syntax and spelling; you’ll be consulted for any changes of word choice or length, and that will be rare.
